The main objective targeted in PACK4COMPOST project was to break the current bottlenecks which hamper the delivery of bio-based and biodegradable packages to the market: the high cost and low processability of existing biodegradable plastics, the empirical design (test and error method) of the package, the lack of knowledge of the structure-properties relationships of the package and of the structuring of materials during their process. In addition to this general objective for adding scientific knowledge, an application driven objective was also proposed, namely to deliver a prototype bio-based and biodegradable package targeted for coffee packaging.
PACK4COMPOST delivered new polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) obtained with mixed microbial cultures (MMC) fed with a by-product from the food industry, cheese whey.
PACK4COMPOST also delivered new cellulosic fibers, namely brewer’s spent grain fibers.
From this materials, PACK4COMPOST delivered 3 prototypes for packaging food products: three types of flexible films produced with film blowing technology that can be scaled up in the industry.
